Let’s Talk About Your Cycle -  No Whispering Required

For decades, most of us were taught that our cycles were this monthly inconvenience best tucked away like the emergency tampon in your work bag. Fast forward to now, and suddenly “cycle syncing” is on every wellness blog, TikTok, and whispered in the pilates locker room. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly - does it work?

At its core, cycle syncing is about aligning your lifestyle (think: workouts, meals, work schedules, even date nights) with the natural hormonal shifts of your menstrual cycle - follicular, ovulation, luteal, and menstrual phases. The big idea? Instead of fighting your shifting energy levels, you actually cooperate with them.

According to research in the Journal of Women's Health (2019), fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone impact everything from mood to metabolism to exercise performance. Translation: those days when you feel like running a marathon or, conversely, when you only want to run a bath - yep, there’s science behind it.

The Four Seasons of Your Body

Wellness coach Alisa Vitti, who popularized cycle syncing in her book In the FLO, describes these phases like seasons:

  • Follicular (Spring): Energy blossoms. Think: new projects, fresh ideas, playful pilates classes.

  • Ovulation (Summer): Peak energy, sociability, charisma. Perfect for presentations or yes, a few extra margaritas with friends.

  • Luteal (Autumn): Tides shift inward. Ideal for nesting, finishing detailed work, and Netflix.

  • Menstrual (Winter): Rest. Restore. Rethink. HIIT can wait until next week.

Harvard researchers (The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2020) also highlight how oestrogen boosts cognitive function during the follicular and ovulatory phases, while higher progesterone in the luteal phase can promote better sleep but lower energy. Harnessing that data isn’t just “woo woo” - it’s practical brain chemistry.

What Science (and TikTok) Actually Say

It’s not just your algorithm: cycle syncing is gaining huge popularity online. Recent research on social media’s role found that most cycle syncing info comes from influencers, not clinicians or scientists. While some evidence suggests hormone changes can influence energy and mood, experts warn that social media often oversimplifies or exaggerates benefits.

For workouts, a 2023 review concluded that the menstrual cycle phase has no significant influence on acute strength or resistance training performance for most women. For diet, the evidence is even thinner; studies struggle to account for individual differences or pinpoint nutrient needs based on phase alone.

That said, tracking your cycle and tuning into your own energy peaks and valleys? Researchers and coaches agree: that self-awareness can be empowering - just don’t expect a miracle productivity hack.

So I Tried It for You: Three Months on the Sync Train

Full disclosure: Like everything in my life, I dove into it head first with a ‘feast or famine’ attitude. But I was determined to test this out over 3 months.  I tracked moods, energy, workouts, and cravings.

The first month was messy. My “follicular” phase fell during a week of deadlines, and I resented my spreadsheet as much as my cramps. By month two, something shifted: being kind to myself (resting when tired, saying no to HIIT when I’d rather nap) felt revolutionary.

By month three, did I discover my productivity superpower? Honestly… sort of? Obviously you can’t organise your whole life around your menstrual phases. I am sure my boss would not be so understanding of me not completing a project because I was riding the crimson wave. However, aligning my social plans with my confident, ovulatory phase felt incredible.

Still, the biggest win was guilt-free permission to listen to my body - a thing that feels radical in our hustle culture.

The Takeaway: Sync or Swim?

Is cycle syncing the secret to better productivity? Maybe for some - but not all. New research is clear: the science is evolving, the benefits are personal, and the hype outpaces the hard data. If it sounds intriguing, try tracking your cycles, experiment with gentle schedule tweaks, and embrace flexibility.

Wellness is deeply personal. If cycle syncing makes you feel more harmonious, more you, or just less guilty about a nap - embrace it. If not? You’re already enough, exactly as you are.
